Report: Free Trials

The Free Trials report shows how many free trials started over a given period — helping you track the top of your acquisition funnel.

Trial volume is a leading indicator of future subscriber growth. Pair this report with trial-to-paid conversion rate to see how well your acquisition efforts are converting.

Free Trials chart

ChartMogul automatically imports lead and trial data from a number of our integrations. A free subscription is classified as a trial based on an invoice line item of the “trial” type. If your Free Trials report appears empty, you may need to set up trial tracking. Learn more.

How Free Trials Are Counted

Only customers with a Trial started at date appear in this report.

On October 2, 2025, we introduced a new “trial” line item type and are gradually making it available to all customers. If you have this feature enabled:

  • Free Trials includes both customers with a Trial started at date and those with trial invoice line items.
  • One customer can have multiple trials.
  • You can filter Free Trials by plan. Plan filters exclude customers who have a Trial started at date but no trial invoice line items.
  • If a customer has both a Trial started at date and trial invoice line items, ChartMogul ignores the Trial started at date.

How ChartMogul Calculates Free Trials

To calculate the number of trials, ChartMogul uses the number of customers who have a Trial started at    date and the number of free subscriptions classified as trials (generated from invoice line items of the “trial” type). If a customer has both a free trial date and a free trial subscription, ChartMogul ignores the free trial date and only counts the free trial subscription. If a customer has multiple free trial subscriptions, ChartMogul counts each subscription separately.

How to Read the Report Data Table

The Report Data table for Free Trials shows a different breakdown than other reports. Each row includes:

  • Free Trials — The number of customers with a Trial started at    date.
  • Change — The increase or decrease in Free Trials from the previous report interval (the time unit your report is grouped by, such as day, week, or month), shown as a percentage.

Select a Free Trials cell to see every free trial started in that reporting period (the date range shown in your report).
